This symposium intends to cover a wide range of ecological and evolutionary aspects of soil mites living in hostile or special habitats, like the littoral fringe, semi-aquatic or aquatic habitats as well as deserts, polar and alpine regions. Ecological aspects, including morphological, physiological and behavioural adaptations to these environments will be discussed. Furthermore this symposium focuses on soil mites living in unusual habitats, as for example the canopy etc., or unique biotopes of National Parks or specific geographic regions. Taxonomic and demographic surveys as well as studies on populations of soil mites in such ecosystems are also of interest.
